Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Children’s Earth Paints wash off of skin, furniture, clothes, etc.? Their paints wash off of skin very easily. It's also easy to clean hardwood floors, even over a month-old spills (you can imagine how they know this). You can wash the paints out of colored clothing and furniture very well, but they will probably leave a slight stain on white clothes unless you get them in the wash quickly. The red color contains iron oxides that leave light pink stains on white clothing.

Are your products vegan? Yes, all of their products are vegan except for the Original Children's Earth Paint Kit and the Children's Earth Paint Kit, Petite. By popular demand, they now have a vegan Children's Earth Paint Kit.

How long do the children's paints last once mixed? Good question! The Children’s Earth paints are best used fresh. They recommend that you mix only as much as you need for one painting session. The Original Paints are milk based and need to be refrigerated after mixing and stay good 4-7 days. The Vegan paints stay good at room temperature for several weeks if kept in a sealed container.

Why mix your own paint when you can buy pre-made containers of paint? They believe that the extra step of mixing the powdered paint is well worth the peace of mind of knowing you are using the safest and most sustainable paint on the market. Their children's paint has only two ingredients, and the powdered pigments in the oil paint kits contain only one ingredient. Most pre-made paints on the market contain a variety of chemical stabilizers, petrochemicals, fillers, and preservatives. That's the "fast food" approach that the mainstream paint industry believes that consumers demand.

Where do you find the blue earth? The blue earth is the only color that has been fired to get this vibrant color. It is composed of 90% earthen clay and 10% man-made, non-toxic minerals, and it is heated in an oven to a high temperature. Throughout history, blues in nature were very rare and usually made with precious stones like Lapis Lazuli. These stones are now unsustainably harvested in Afghanistan, so they have found this beautiful alternative.

What is the Titanium Dioxide made of? Titanium dioxide occurs in nature as the well-known mineral, Rutile. Rutile is the second most abundant mineral sand. It is processed to extract the pure white mineral that they use in their paint kits.

Have these paints been tested for health safety? Yes, all of the paints and pigments have been tested by government certified toxicologists and certified completely non-toxic.

Where are their paints made? They purchase their pigments from large, reputable pigment companies within the United States. They manufacture their paints in Ashland, Oregon.

Can you eat them? Their paints are not intended for consumption. Additionally, if your child is allergic to dairy products, then you may want to reduce your child's exposure to handling the Children's paints.

Can you use Earth Paints as face paint? Earth pigments have been used by most indigenous cultures to paint their faces and bodies for thousands of years. Their Natural Face Paint kits are made with a cosmetic base emulsification and a low percentage of pigments. However, the Children's paints and the Oil paints have a high concentration of pigments, so they may be drying or irritating to the skin. The oil paint is rather difficult to wash off the skin (use Murphy's Oil Soap if you're here for help with this).

Can you paint your walls with Earth Paints? Yes, you can paint murals or decorative art on your walls with both the Children's paint and the Earth Oil paint. Remember that the Children's paints are water-soluble, so wet kids' fingers will smear it. Their recommendation is to mix the powdered Earth Oil pigments with wheat paste as the binder.

The Story Leah Fanning Mebane founded Natural Earth Paint in 2011. As a professional visual artist and mom, Leah was called to provide non-toxic paints for her community of fine artists and health-conscious parents. Leah began making natural paints and eliminated all toxins from her studio in 2009, while pregnant with her son Django. Natural Earth Paints, LLC, was born a few years later with only two products:  the Children’s Earth Paint Kit and the Earth Oil Paint Kit.

Right from the start she wanted to focus on eco-friendly and completely non-toxic art supplies and very high quality and archival products. She is still committed to an eco-friendly business model as reflected by their prestigious Gold certification from Green America - the highest rank for a green business. Today the phrase “small, family business” is still very accurate, though they are growing fast. They continue to use post consumer recycled packaging, biodegradable plastic bags and recyclable glass bottles. They plant one native tree sapling in Southern Oregon with every order received on their website and continuously spread the word about the dangers of toxic art supplies for their health and the health of their only planet.
